July 4th Story S/Sgt Jimmy Howard, MOH Vietnam

Any of you Vietnam Marines ever run across this Marine? I don’t post many links. But I couldn’t do the story justice just excerpting it. But this is a hero for the century. Maybe he has been honored here before. But he represents what people country has produced and can still do when not hindered by apologists.

That is a hell of a read...I remember hearing about him shortly after that action, people were in awe not just of him but every single man on that hill.  Outstanding 4 July story.

I did have the honor of meetingSsgt(just calle me Jim) Howard.  One of his indians had gotten out of our Corps but, lost his way in the civilian world and was going to recruiter's school in the fall of 86.  He had been shot through the jaw on that night.  A few weeks into the school he invited us to an evening at the staff club.  We hesitantly went as none of us were snco's and he was just a Cpl.  Much to our suprise, we were welcomed in and sitting alone was a an older gentleman.  Thus my introduction, to Ssgt Howard.  He wanted to talk little of that evening but after a little liquid encouragement a grand time was had.

Hill 488, written by Ray Hildreth. Excellent book. I just picked up a second book a week ago and sent it to my nephew in Iraq.
