7July 1846: US Marines secure Monterey, CA and claim the Presidio from Mexico for the USofA. The ceremony recreating the landing of Commodore Sloat and the US Marines aboard the US Flagship Savannah has been held every year at the Customs House in Monterey, CA since 1931 - with the exception of during WWII. This year(2008) Commodore Sloat was played by Capt Loomis (USN, Ret) and Marines from DLI were on hand to take part in the ceremony and hoist the US Flag. http://www.militarymuseum.org/Monterey.html This information is from an Original Post last year by MapleLeaf.
7 July 1941: The 1st Marine Aircraft Wing was activated at Quantico, Virginia. Within a year of activation, the Wing would participate in the Marine Corps offensive at Guadalcanal. That bitter campaign would be the first in a series of legendary battles in which the Wing would add luster to its reputation. The 1stMAW would earn five Presidential Unit Citations for gallantry in campaigns spanning World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
7 July 1966: Largest multi-Battalion operation of Vietnamese war to date - "Hastings".

Marine, PFC Richard Burgess, was taken by the NVA after being wounded and rendered unconscious. The Burge was held for almost six years.
