Re: Acoustic Weapon Locating
The only reference I know of for HALO is in parachuting..
High Altitude Low Opening; used for clandestine entry into hostle areas.

Re: Acoustic Weapon Locating
Thanks. HALO is an artillery thing it uses the sound of a large calibre gun to identify where it is. The Brits Canadians and USMC have it but I can only find photos of the brits and Canadians. I want photos of the USMC using it if at all possible. Cheers

Re: Acoustic Weapon Locating
At first I wasn't sure what to think of your post, but after looking it up, yeah there is a system called the Hostile Artillery Locator that BAE Systems is putting together. It's supposed to be a passive system which would mean it's better than a fire-finder radar, but I haven't seen any pictures of it myself (not surprising). Don't know why they didn't just call it HAL either.

Re: Acoustic Weapon Locating
HAL has bad connotations. ( 2001 a space oddessey). The system is made by Selex Galileo now in UK. They were part of BAe Systems. I am just looking for proof that they have it with the USMC. I have been told by a brit Gunner that the US have it but he says that he has not actually seen it. I have seen it with the Canadians and the Japanese and understand it is in service with the Spanish and someone in the Middle East. My father was a UK Royal Artillery Instructor of Gunnery (Locating) and he ws involved with the old Sound Ranging systems and I am trying to find stuff about the new methods. Cheers

So does NBC :D (oh, wait, I forgot, they changed it to CBRN, point taken) I don't think it'd matter much, I don't think Arthur C. Clarke's lawyers are going to whine about it. Besides, there's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, they use HAL as an abbreviation, and they make military aircraft. Check GlobalSecurity, they may have some more info on this technology.

Have you guys noticed that no Marines have responded to this thread in a serious and informative manner? Perhaps it is not an open subject for discussion. Just a thought.

Yeah, I noticed. I don't think many people on here are that interested, that's why I pointed him to GS.org, If anything, GlobalSecurity might have some info. I try to keep current on new things the military has, and that site's my favorite for this kinda stuff. If ya can't find a GS article on it, they've got a forum now, post there. Or he could run a quick google search, probably find a few threads about it somewhere.

Re: Acoustic Weapon Locating
Or it could still be classified and his digging could be seen in a less than positive way. He hasn't filled out his bio and he is in the UK. We don't know who the hell he is and he never engages in light banter. He only asks intelligence type questions. If you can't easily find info on weapons systems, there is usually a reason for it. Peoples lives depend on this type of technology and we Marines don't take lightly the possibility of someone running their mouths too much and endangering our troops.

Re: Acoustic Weapon Locating
True, I don't want to see anyone hurt by this guy's nosing
around. There's nothing out there more specific than a vague outline
of what it is and a couple of stories about a guy that tried to sell
data about the program. And it is pretty suspicious that he didn't put anything about himself, that was the first thing I did, so y'all could have a bit of a clue that I'm an aspiring writer. I think this thread should be locked up, there's nothing really more to be said that would be unclassified. Besides, this site doesn't really deal with this kind of stuff (new emerging tech) anyway.

Sorry Mike, Just got your email on this one.
There are a few YouTube Videos you can easily look up on it. Most of the weapon system specs and what not are of a classified nature and will not be talked about on this board either in the open or in the Private Forums. Most real Brits would know this, though you are posting from Warminster in England.

Re: Acoustic Weapon Locating
Thanks for clarifying, Yeti. I firmly believe that if you aren't sure of a subjects classification then don't talk about it.

Re: Acoustic Weapon Locating
Sorry chaps I have been away. I only posted this on the site as It seemed a sensible place to ask if anyone has any photos. I was not aware that I would be putting anyone's nose out of joint nor would I be causing a security breech. The UK is quite open about the system. I just wondered if there were any phots of it in USMA hands. Phots at Ft Sill or anywhere would do. I am not after info about what you are doing with it or where. No bio data as it seems a bit of a waste as I was only coming along to ask the one question. You will find me on arrse as a regular contributer. Bye sorry to have upset you.

I went googling and found that there is a Website in the UK called Arrse( ARmy Rumor SErvice). If the user-id he is using is the same there as here, the following link is to his profile page there: http://www.arrse.co.uk/Your_Account/profile=4416.html
It is just slightly more informative than his Bio here.

I do believe it's time for a good old thread lock.
