Do OCS go through the crucible?
Dearest Members of forum.grunt.com,
First, I want to thank the moderators of the board and all the people who
have chimed in. From reading past threads I have gotten a lot of previously
asked questions answered.
Second, my question's are:
1. How do I become an officer and do the crucible?
2. Are enlistment terms the same for all Marines as opposed to special commitment
terms for officers? For example, if I go through officer training, is it also 8
total years (maybe stop loss)?
3. Correct me if I am wrong, there are two options (in my case) since I can not
go the route of United States Naval
Academy, to becoming an officer,
1. PLC/ OCC and 2. NROTC. In any of these scenarios it does not say that I
would be able to participate in the crucible.
Background information: I am 20 years old
majoring in business about to transfer from junior community college to a 4
year school. At this point in time I am looking for military friendly schools
(NROTC) preferably located in California.
My grades are all at 3.0 GPA+ and I am currently doing cardio everyday, so far I
have lost 30 pounds from 240 to now 210, at 5’6 I still need to lose 60 more
pounds.
Thank you in advance and sincerely, Ben

Re: Do OCS go through the crucible?
There will be two rotor heads that will come in and answer many of these questions in time,
they have been answered before.
Except for the Crucible one for Officers, as a Marine who was getting out about the Crucible was coming in not quite sure of the answer. I know one who has recently went through OCS, and will send him a note later about it.
Now far as Military Friendly Campus and Califorina in the same mix, I thought that was rather funny. It's probably a question best answered by someone with personal (recent) experience on a campus there.
Use your search function, get some answers (and a few more questions on those answers) and you will find Marines more than willing to give you good scoop.

Re: Do OCS go through the crucible?
OCS does not have "The Crucible", but many aspects of the training are similar, such as problem solving under stress, sleep deprivation, etc. I suspect OCS is pretty much 10 straight weeks of the crucible.

Re: Do OCS go through the crucible?
Dearest Members of forum.grunt.com,
First, I want to thank the moderators of the board and all the people who have chimed in. From reading past threads I have gotten a lot of previously asked questions answered.
Second, my question's are:
1. How do I become an officer and do the crucible? Go see your Marine Recruiter and ask to see the Officer Selection Officer (OSO), to see if you qualify. Officer's don't have a Crucible, only Enlisted, the Crucible is over-rated, OCS- itself is physically harder.
2. Are enlistment terms the same for all Marines as opposed to special commitment terms for officers? For example, if I go through officer training, is it also 8 total years (maybe stop loss)? Enlisted have EAS (End of Active Service date), Officers have "Indefinate" in the EAS blank. Enlisted will request to re-enlist and await approval, and then re-enlist. 80% of the Marine Officers are Reserve Officers, depending on their MOS, they will see if they get "Augmented", for Flyers it's at Major, most everyone else it's Captain. If you don't get Augmented, you will be requested to leave Active Duty and either go into the active Reserve or the Inactive Reserve. Marine Officers can be called back to active duty at anytime.
3. Correct me if I am wrong, there are two options (in my case) since I can not go the route of United States Naval Academy, to becoming an officer, USNA is one route, NROTC is another, PLC/OCS is another, along with programs for Enlisted Marines (Active or Reserve), like Enlisted Commissioning Program (ECP), MECEP. and Direct Commissioning.
1. PLC/ OCC and 2. NROTC. In any of these scenarios it does not say that I would be able to participate in the crucible.<No Crucible

Cal State Northridge, Pepperdine University, USC, UCLA, UCSD, USD, Chico, UCSF, the list is long.........hell even Berkley is okay, not an easy place, but you would have bragging rights that you made it!
Lose the wieght, run and run some more, be able to do more pull ups, than you are currently doing, get to be much more physically fit.
Thank you in advance and sincerely,
Ben

Re: Do OCS go through the crucible?
Military friendly universities in CA, lol good luck. But on the other hand NROTC scholarships are very competitive, its not like the Army where they just sign you up. You have to be real good PT wise and academically to get in in the first place. I know because I was looking at NROTC schools here in IL and there were like 2 and both had real competative admissions.

Re: Do OCS go through the crucible?
Well Idian-kid, USC and UCLA have a very big ROTC Program, USC supplies a lot of young men for Marine Corps OCS. Same with San Diego, Santa Barbara, Northridge, and the rest.........

Re: Do OCS go through the crucible?
Miller hit most of what I was going to say. OCS is now divided into Small Unit Leadership Eval (SULE) phases. According to my friends who were prior enlisted, the "SULE X" phases were about 100x harder than the crucible.
As for EAS, officers do have them now. Ground contract is 5 yrs... Aviation is 6-8 years from the date of winging. But... as Miller stated, its not exactly up to you when / if you get out... that's just your first available date to get out... and you're forever in the reserves.
And Indian -- you're a turd. There are several good NROTC programs in CA. USC is one of the biggest programs in the country. But, in reality, bring NROTC won't save you much... you'll still have to do OCS over the summers.
Pretty soon we can say "YAY!" again

Just a friendly piece of advice since I gave up eating poolees for Lent, if you do not learn to show more respect to a Gunnery Sergeant than you have just shown to Gunnery Sergeant Miller, boot camp will be even more hell than it needs to be.
