Calling all quilters! (I need help!)

So, I think I have asked this before but don't want to look it up.

What all should I have before I make my first attempt at this?  I am not really familiar with my sewing machine, because Steve just got it for me, but I plan on playing with it a little before I actually do a quilt.

Would you recomend just getting the rotary and rotary cutter to make things easier?  How do you come up with your patterns?  Should I get a book? haha   I guess a lot of it will be trial and error until I master the sewing machine either way, but I just don't want to make it anymore difficult on myself than I have to.

I have never made a quilt but Shaun's grandma whips them out like nobodys business. She has a lot of books but sometimes she just goes hunting around at yardsales to look for old patterns she can do.  I got a sewing machine about 3 years ago and I haven't even cracked the tape on the box. I've seen some really cool fabric cutting tools on t.v. here lately. It's sort of motivating me lol.  Anyway.....

Best of luck!! I bet you'll come up with something beautiful!!

Hello...this is actually my first post on here. But if you or anyone else has quilting questions or needs I'm your girl.

Yes get a rotator cutter and mat. Patterns at first are very helpful. Try a easy four patch with a solid in between or a railroad pattern. (can be found online) There are several free patterns online. Do not try to do anything that says paper piecing or with circles or angles at first. You will get there once you get use to it. I started quilting about 2 years ago and haven't stopped they make great gifts and everyone loves them. I sent a photo quilt with my Marine when he deployed and he sleeps with it every night. Then I made him a mission pillow with a picture of me sleeping on it.

It's been awhile since you posted this but I hope it helps.
