    ON THIS DAY IN MARINE CORPS HISTORY, VER 2

    10 November 1775: The Continental Congress authorized the creation of the Marine Corps. document.write(bday); 232 years and still counting.
    10 November 1992: Flags were lowered at Marine Barracks, Guam for the last time. It was established on 1 August 1899.

    10 November 1921: This date marked the first formal commemoration of the birthday of the Marine Corps as 10 November. On 21 October 1921, Maj Edwin McClellan, OIC of the Historical Section, HQMC, sent a memo to MajGen Commandant John A. Lejeune, suggesting that the original birthday of 10 November 1775 be declared a Marine Corps holiday to be celebrated throughout the Corps. Accordingly, on 1 Nov 1921, Gen Lejeune issued Marine Corps Order No. 47 summarizing the history, mission, and tradition of the Corps, and directed that it be read to every command each 10 November.

    11 November 1918: Armistice Day. WW I ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year.

    12 November 1824: Marines landed at Fajardo, Puerto Rico to protect Americans.
    12 November 1946: Gerald C. Thomas, the first Marine to rise from private to general, rank by rank, received his second Legion of Merit.

    13 November 1982: The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, containing the names of more than 13,000 Marines who lost their lives in Vietnam, was dedicated this date at the Memorial site in Washington, D.C. The dedication and parade that preceded it were part of a week-long National Salute to Vietnam Veterans.

    13 November 1962: 400 Marines (3/4) flew to Guam to assist with typhoon damage.
    13 November 1968: Operation Daring Endeavor was commenced by the 7th Marine Regiment in Vietnam.

    14 November 1966: First 4 year Jr. ROTC unit is commissioned.
    14 November 1967: Major General Bruno Hochmuth, CG, 3rdMarDiv, died in a helicopter accident in Vietnam.

    16 November 1856: Marines participated in the Battle of Barrier Forts in China.
    16 November 1899: Marines from the USS Castine and the USS Manila captured Zamboanga, Philippines.
    16 November 1942: VMF(N)-531 commissioned at Cherry Point, North Carolina. First Night Fighter Squadron.

    17 November 1918: The 4th Marine Brigade, as part of the 2d Division, American Expeditionary Force, began its march to the Rhine River, passing through Belgium and Luxembourg, as part of the American forces occupying a defeated Germany.

    17 November 1859: Melody utilized in "The Marines' Hymn" premiered in Offenbach's operetta.
    17 November 1915: Leatherneck Magazine established.

    18 November 1915: Marines participated in the Battle of Fort Riviere during the occupation of Haiti.
    18 November 1955: A memorial honoring the 4th Marine Brigade was dedicated at Belleau Wood, France by General Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr.

    19 November 1879: The Argentine Marine Corps was founded.
    20 November 1943: The 2ndMarDiv landed at Betio ISland, Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands.

    It's fixed now, sorry about October instead of November.

    20 November 1943: The 2ndMarDiv landed at Betio ISland, Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands.
    20 November 1947: Major Bill Hendricks and Marine reservists started Toys For Tots in Los Angeles around this date. The Marine Corps Reserve adopted the program one year later.

    20 November 1943: The 2d Marine Division, commanded by Major General Julian C. Smith, landed on Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands. After seventy-six hours of bitter fighting during which almost 1,000 Marines died, and more than 2,000 were wounded, MajGen Smith declared the island secure.

    22 November 1776: Marines raid Canso Harbor.
    22 November 1943: Tarawa was secured after 72 hours of bitter fighting.
    22 November 1991: Colonel Gary Blair, CO, Marine Barracks GDE, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and BGen George Walls Jr., CG/JTF, gave humanitarian needs for Haitian migrants during Operation "Gitmo."

    24 November 1992: Marines lowered the flag at Subic Bay, U.S. Naval Facility, Republic of the Philippines, for the last time during ceremonies to turn over the facility to the government of the Philippines. The withdrawal ended almost a century of U.S. presence in that nation.

    24 November 1775: Marines of Washington's fleet board British brig in Boston Bay.
    24 November 1942: The 1stMAW established the South Pacific Combat Air Transport(SCAT).

    25 November 1855: American interests in Uruguay protected by seagoing Marines.
    25 November 1958: The Marine Corps grade structure was revised to make room for additional ranks (E8/E9).

    27 November 1950: In a carefully planned assault, eight Chinese Communist divisions in Korea launched a massive attack which had as its expressed purpose, the destruction of the 1st Marine Division. This action led to the successful southward Marine Corps attack out of the Changjin (Chosin) Reservoir to the coastal port of Hungnam.

    27 November 1941: The 4th Marine Regiment departed Shanghai, China to strengthen forces at Olongapo, Philippines.

    30 November 1962: MSgt Catherine Murray was the first woman Marine to transfer to the FMCR.
