If you don't have any of the fancy stuff to do, it try poking a tiny hole in the lid.  The vaccum is released and the lid comes off much easier without spending $19.95 on any gadgetry. 

There are also those floppy rubber discs that are fairly cheap or you can buy those rubber drawer liners and cut that into squares to use.

A thick rubber band around the lid will give you a grip and make turning it easier. Paul

I take a butter knife and whack the edge of the lid in 5 or 6 places.... comes right off.

Run very hot water over the cap for a few seconds.  The heat will cause the cap to "expand" enough to turn easily.

Do you have a cure for the burns you'll get on your fingers doing it that way? LOL

yep yep.beat it with a knife or a spoon.it always works for me.

 

dont try and force jelly jars though...i did and it cost me 30 stitches (and a really cool scar)

I found using about 7 or 8 inches of det cord works wonders.

I find it very amusing that a man started this thread. I've never encountered a jar that I could not open with my bar hands.

 

Yes, the knife/spoon tapping does make it easier though.

As grandma got old, I made her a jar opener.

 

take a piece of flat wood, like plywood.

Embed a couple of hacksaw blades in the edge of 2 1x2 boards. Lengthwise, teeth out, so it just makes a toothed edge on the board. 

Attach them to the flat board, in a wide V shape. 

mount under a cabinet where it is easy to reach.

 

To open any jar, wedge the lid in to the V so the teeth grab it. Turn the jar.

Grandma is 86 now, and still opens her own jars with it. She's had it about 20 years now. 

Be very careful opening those jars.  One guy at work crushed the jar with his hand while trying to turn the lid with the other.  Cut was Bad enought to keep him out a Week.  Deep enough that he needed internal stitches to close up the wound.  Took about 3 weeks to heal up completly.

 

Just a Jar of pears, glass must have been thin.

Considering one of these as Grandma approaches 90.

If all else fails, there is a company called Kuhn Rikon that makes the best-est jar opener ever.  It has a long handle and this clamp down device that a 90 year old grandma could manipulate the toughest lid with ease.
