Silly maybe, but it works for me.

I have an oil pan. A plastic, oil drain pan for changing automotive oil. It came with a plug that is maybe 1/4" high on the nut. The thread on it is a standard broom stick thread. I bought a broom stick for $2.99, cut the nut off right above the metal, and threaded it into my drain pan.   The nut has at least 1-1/2" of body on it. Much easier to deal with.
