RE: Officer Candidate Intro
My advice is this:
"Do it for you, not your parents."
If you're doing it to impress your parents, don't waste YOUR time for SOMEONE ELSE. I assume your 18+, so whether or not you have your parents acceptance, you can still sign the papers.

RE: Officer Candidate Intro
I meant to introduce myself to the forum and tell my story and seek general advice rather than bother you with specifics. Obviously with a goal such as Force Recon I will not expect nor receive any respect from any of you. (Unless of course, I actually become a Recon Marine.)
I have been reading many posts, and the only problem is that there is often bad information or dozens of replies from hard to verify sources. Furthermore, I have received conflicting information from my recruiter, as well.
The current talks are like this:
-I will attend basic next summer and attempt to become a Marine.
-I will take a semester off to attend PLC.
-If successful, upon graduation I will attend OCS, TBS, train for my MOS, and then immediately be screened for RIP after joining my unit.
-Between the summer of basic and OCS, I will be a reserve Marine.
My recruiter claims that I must be in the reserves in order to attend PLC. The main reason I would attend PLC is to receive more respect during OCS and also be guaranteed a MOS of my choice. Does any of this make any sense, or is my recruiter ****ing with me? I have read else ware that you can attend only PLC and then go straight to OCS upon graduation. Not only that, I have also read that I can be deployed before I even graduate and even while attending PLC or OCS.
Any help would be appreciated in helping me straighten out this mess.

RE: Officer Candidate Intro
1) PLC and OCS are one in the, but different programs different prerequisites
2) Joining the Reserves, isn't a prerequisite......Had people talked into that Reserve thing, never understood why, except that they "Got you" and you can't drop so easily.
3) PLC has a Junior and a Senior Program.....I suggest the Senior program.(Sr- 1 summer session for 13 weeks or so and you're done) (Jr.- 2 6week sessions, over 2 summers)
4) TBS will be next, after you are Commissioned.
5) Unless you sign an Aviation Option or are in the Lawyer Option, you are not guarenteed any MOS, unless you graduate top 10 percentile, I believe!
6) Read the appropriate posts below.....I bumped them up for you.

RE: Officer Candidate Intro
Please verify that this is correct:
1. PLC summer of Junior year for 10 weeks. Upon completion I will be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant.
2. TBS upon graduation
3. MOS training
4. Ability to attempt entry into RIP
What doesnt make sense to me is that PLC is shorter than basic training and is also shorter than OCS. Why is this? Not only this, why is my recruiter telling me I have to do PLC AND OCS?

RE: Officer Candidate Intro
Please verify that this is correct:
1. PLC summer of Junior year for 10 weeks. Upon completion I will be commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. Listen up! You will be JUNIOR in College, attending the 10 WEEK PLC SENIOR COURSE! You are not a Commissioned 2dLT till you graduate from College as well
2. TBS upon graduation ~ Yes~ON GRADUATION FROM PLC/OCS, if you have ALREADY GRADUATED FROM COLLEGE!
3. MOS training- THE MARINE CORP WILL PUT YOU IN AN MOS, You HAVE NO MOS GUARENTY as an OFFICER (You better be in the top 10 percentile to have a choice), UNLESS YOU HAVE QUALIFIED FOR THE AVIATION OPTION OR LAW OPTION!
4. Ability to attempt entry into RIP.......It's your roll of the dice.
What doesnt make sense to me is that PLC is shorter than basic training and is also shorter than OCS. Why is this? The PLC SENIOR COURSE is the SAME LENGTH AS OCS

RE: Officer Candidate Intro
Thank you for making me aware of the combined PLC. The offical Marine Corps website doesn't even mention it. Revised plan:
1. PLC Combined summer '06 13 weeks
2. Graduate from college and become 2nd Lt.
3. Attend TBS
4. MOS training
5. Attempt to enter RIP.
Please understand that my recruiter had me believing that I had to attend both PLC and OCS to become an officer and didn't even mention combined PLC, not to mention he said that joining the reserves is required to enter PLC.

RE: Officer Candidate Intro
If you can't figure this out you'll get dropped in week 2... The hardest part shouldn't be figuring out what OCS is.

I swear they are making them dumber every freaking day.
Gunny Miller,
If you wouldn't mind making a thread with the Officer Path following, with College to Officer; Enlisted to Officer; and Enlisted to CWO notes. I will sticky it, our local Lt's can feel free to do so as well.
Then we will just start refering the rocks to that thread.

Hey, I was told I could get back in( w/ my degree) and be a Recon/SEaL/Sniper/ParaJumper. I was thinking about being Commendant of the Marine Corps, but don't want to start at the top of the ladder, just yet. Also, I was told I could do all that and be a Zulu Snake Driver. Y'all look for me killing all the bad guys... ok?

You forgot the Cold Weather Training, along with Jungle Warfare School.

RE: Officer Candidate Intro
Unless I am mistaken what MOS you get (which would determine if your a grunt officer and even eligible for RECON) doesn't happen until TBS and that is based upon where you fall in the class (IE divided into thirds then subcategorized from there). SO that being said to join as an OFFICER and say your going to be RECON is a real stretch. Of course I could just be one of those people giving bad or misleading information, my knowledge only comes from 12 years of active duty and not from a website or a book. I could be wrong!

I am NOT a Marine, but I spent the last three years in NROTC as a Marine Option. Alot off my classmates are at TBS or have recently graduated TBS and they all say it is exactly like you said. I believe they called it a "Quality Spread". Basically the class is divided into thirds, and then ranked within each third. Top guys in each third get first choice and so on.
