    RE: Civil war

During the civil war, 90% of the officers in the Corps resigned their commissions and served in the Confederate Marine Corps. The ones that stayed behind and the enlisted Marines were attached to Army units. If you want some info on Marines in the Civil War, do a search for Cpl John Mackie and 1stLt Israel Green.
