    Oh my! Here we go!

Not that I am a proud individual, (well, yes I am), but I can see myself spending a lot of time here! There is nothing I can't fix, so bring it on!Sit-Up

Sounds like y'all got the fixing part covered, what y'all can't fix, I can silence, hide, or destroy with out leaving any evidence of previous existence! EGA

Tom, thought you might like to know that my house is alive with the sound of tearing carpet and ringing hammers as the old carpet is being taken out, thank goodness, the soggy particle board is being pulled up, preparations are being made to paint, and put down new hard wood floors.  The carpet and what was under it was really scary.

Kathy, I don't do carpet. I don't have the tools nor the knees for it. I have refinished some hard wood floors. That's not a big deal, just time consuming and messy. I hate to paint, but again, not a big deal for me. Time consuming and messy! I'm sensing a theme here!!!

Good luck with your project. It's amazing how a relatively little bit of work can turn a house around. I just put a new tub drain and sink faucet in my bathroom and the difference it made was incredible. All totaled, maybe 3 hours work tops (and it wouldn't have taken that long if my one hose wasn't shot, which meant another trip) and the room shines. Best of luck. If you have a contractor, MAKE SURE you get what you asked for.

How long was that carpeting there?  and why was the particle board soggy?

    Tom,

I HAVE to refinish my hardwoods...my German Shepherd has ruined them with her movements and 2 area rugs....how labor intensive is it? Would I be better to have someone else do it, and just spend the money, or can I do it (i.e. renting a sander, staining and poly-ing the floor myself)?

The hardwoods I dont think have never been done, so I know their not to thin to do....but their are some serious urine stains from the dog....

We bought our house from an elderly couple with Alzheimer's and pets. Not good. The hardwood floor I did for my daughter's room (now my son's room) was a mess. Urine and whatever else were stained throughout. I rented a sander. I'd say I sanded for about a full day. I started with the roughest grit and worked my way down to the fine grit pads. This was 8 years ago but it cost about $40 for the sander and maybe $25 in paper and pads. I then stained a dark oak. The dark stain covered the spots that were too deep to sand out. For me, it was worth it. The floor came out beautifully. I sealed it with polyurethane and 8 years and 2 kids later it still looks great.

Gunny, I have no clue how long the carpet had been there, but there was no vapor barrier between the particle board and the sub floor also the previous two owners of the house had animals.  It was a mess.  So the carpet came up and am having a contractor put in the floor.

This is the second time that we have pulled carpet up.  The hubby, bad news and all, did all the hard work of pulling up the carpet, taking up the particle board and the Contractor that did the floor was recommended to us from a gentleman at work.  Will have the same contractor put this floor down.  I hate to paint as well and the smell makes me crazy but really didn't want any more wall paper.  We have redone the whole kitchen, redone the small bathroom, the hallway and the floors in the dining room.  I never knew how talented the hubby was until we started this.  Now he's talking about residing the house.

Most people don't know how "easy" it is. I say that tongue-in-cheek. You have to have an eye for it, you have to have vision, and above all you have to have the right tools. Add in a little patience and most times it comes out ok. It also helps to know your limitations. I don't do roofs, carpet, major concrete jobs, or therapeautic massage. Other than that, we've got it covered.
