Two butt ugly Vietnam Marines for the price of one. I hope both of you wear masks, otherwise, you'll scare the hell out of them.

Good deal Jim and John. I wish I was closer cause I'd like to sit in on that class myself.
Later that night, while I was thinking about the day's somber events, Cpl. Richard A. Mason, an infantryman with Headquarters Platoon, who, in the short time I was with the company became a good friend, told me, "You're still here, don't forget that. Tell your kids, your grandkids, what Sgt. Peralta did for you and the other Marines today." Quote from a story written by combat correspondent LCpl Travis J. Kaemmerer who, unfortunately, died in a car crash in Virginia after returning from Iraq.

Cool Beans, Good on you and John.
It's always better to learn something from someone that has been there. The students will be able to talk to living history instead of reading it. Now doesn't that sentence make us feel old. I'm sure you will have to field all kinds of questions.

I just hope that the John-san, doesn't just talk on and on about the M-48A3 Patton Tank.........and check his slides too! They could either be more info on the M-48A3 or R&R liberty in Bangkok, Thialand.
Yeah, second that Bro' John... please leave out the part about brillo jobs.

Be sure and tell them about the necessity of not wearing skivvies while in the bush and having the azz of your utilty trousers ripped open. I bet that's one bit of info they won't find in their history books.

JimMc: I'll just have to ask John not to call the NVA the ******* gooks.
Since there are probably grandchildren of VC at the school I would suggest the less offensive "slopes", or "zips".
There is no "I" in "team", but there are four of them in "platitude-quoting idiot."

But, I'd like to suggest the all purpose, and totally inoffensive, "Dinks" as an alternative. Or perhaps to humanize the enemy, "Luke" should be used.
Also, may I suggest about twenty minutes of "Flood/Air Raid" to wake the little dears up prior to the soporific droanings of two old fart Marines?
Good to Go, JimmyMac and Treadhead!

Jim&John, this is a good thing.
It will be very interesting to see a report on the attention and interest they have regarding the subject. And, especially, what kind of questions they ask.
Good luck and let us know the reactions.

Hey that was me ! I talked about catching a dose of clap in a small village North of Seoul and about catching gooks in a cross fire resulting in their guts being strung out all over the barbed wire. They didn't think it was appropiate.

Well, today is the day that John enters my world. These kind and dedicated teachers have also committed to taking us to the local slopchute, when school gets out, and buying beers for our endeavors. I'll give an update on how many times John says f*** and gook tomorrow. When I am unemployed next week, does anyone have any connections in SE PA anywhere for me?

Jim, if those kids are typical of most kids, they hear worse than f**k in the hallways of the school and a lot ot them hear worse in their homes.
But I know those same mommas and daddies who cuss up a storm in front of their kids would be the first to start raisin hell over what somebody said in front of their kids at school.
Hypocrites of the nth degree.

Talk about coming in on this thread at the 11th hour!!! I saw the title and did not look at the author so I ignored it until now.
The class was great!!! Even if I do say so myself. Jimmy Mac played off of me and I off of him so the presntation was quite enhanced and detailed...versus one of us doing it alone. The two teachers, Ron and Ed. were blown away. Ron, who is Jimmy Mac's good buddy said that he wants us back next year when his class studies Vietnam again. I asked Ron to have the kids write out a critique of the class so we can add, subtract and/or generally enhance the presentation to make it even more exciting and informative.
And trust me, I had to measure every word so as to not utter, "F*ckin' gooks," "Hitting the $hit," "Ham & Mother F*ckers," and any other explitive filled Vietnamized phrase...it was hard but I think that I did a fairly respectable job. The two slides of some Australian USO girls in scanty costumes got the young boys attention...as did the photos of flame tanks doing their thing.

It was very cool indeed. There was only one glitch. About a half hour before we are supposed to go on, I get a phone call from John. "Jim, I'm in the parking lot of Central Bucks South. Where are you? " " John, you know I work in Council Rock, why would I be in Central Bucks?" "Jim I'm in the wrong school district." "John, No shi*" "Get over here quickly." I must say that he did make good time getting over. They are neighboring school districts.
Anyway, I put together a power point with my pictures and John had slides put onto a CD of his pictures. We had the right amount of pictures to have Q and A afterwards. So, for no prior coordination or practice, it went very well. Having been a teacher for 34 years, it was kind of natural to me. However, I was very impressed with how John was with those kids. He kept it moving, held their attention, answered questions, and added a good amount of humor when needed. I hope the kids walked away knowing something more about Viet Nam than Rambo.
Jimmy Mac, when are you comin back?
