I gave John McCain my Marine Dad coin today!

John McCain visited Cecil Field in Jacksonville, Florida this morning.  I attended the event as it was only a half mile from my office.  After the speech he was making his way out to his 'Straight Talk Express' bus and shaking hands along the rope line. I held my camera up and took some photos as he approached.

Then I had an idea: I would give the Senator my Marine Dad coin as a way of connecting with him in the brotherhood of Marine Dads!

    " width=1 border=0 mce_src="">" width=1 border=0 mce_src="">

He was taking a photo with a mom and her baby and I reached into my pocket and pulled out my Marine Dad coin that I have carried since my sons left for boot camp more than 2 years ago!

I held it out in front of him and said "Senator, aren't you a Marine Dad?  Do you have a Marine Dad coin?" as he stared at the coin.  "Well you do, now!" I said, as I handed it to him.  He smiled real big, said thanks, and shook my hand and put the coin in his pocket.

I grabbed a business card from my wallet and handed it to his wife, Cindi.  I told her "Please give my card to John, I am the Marine Dad who gave him the coin."  She smiled and took the card and said "I'm a VERY PROUD Marine Mom!" as she pointed toward her single blue star Mother's flag pin.

I hope the coin will help John and his Marine son to connect even stronger.

After I returned to my office, I went on-line to Sgt Grit's and ordered a new Marine Dad coin and some "Like Father Like Son US Marine" bumper stickers!

Good deal Norb! I wish you could have got someone to take a pic of you and him together.

You'd have looked at least as happy as that baby Wink

Seriously though, that's a good thing you did. If that guy with the camera behind McCain is a news cameraman, your on the evening news!

As heiress to her father's stake in Hensley & Co. of Phoenix, Cindy McCain is an executive whose worth may exceed $100 million. Her beer earnings have afforded the GOP presidential nominee a wealthy lifestyle with a private jet and vacation homes at his disposal, and her connections helped him launch his political career -- even if the millions remain in her name alone. Yet the arm's-length distance between McCain and his wife's assets also has helped shield him from conflict-of-interest problems.

Good going, Norb! Great story & photos!

Now, see that tall gray haired man crying in the background? He's crying because he's a democrat and he knows neither one of his parties candidates stands a sinner's chance in hell of getting into the White House.

If you're going to reprint media at least give a quote.  Read this in WaPo or NYT or was it an AP story yesterday.

Can you imagine being a Secret Service agent on that detail and Norb walks up taking pics, then reaches into his pocket and hands McCain something that they can't see?

Norb, I'd say you came within a hair on a gnat's butt of being taken down lol.

That's got to be a very difficult job, trying to determine when and when not to act.

McCain doesn't use the Secret Service yet.  They'll cramp his style he says.  I don't think candidates must use the SS until they're nominated by the party officially.

Patty your comment has no place in this thread about how one Marine Dad connected with another.   There is a forum for political crap here on Sgt Grit's, http://forums.grunt.com/forums/218.aspx you should air your political views there.

I give up on fixing the coin, the tools for posting photos on this forum aren't the greatest.

No worries, Norb; the photos are outstanding.

Cindi McCain is good people, regardless of her net worth.  While I was living in Eagle Lake (SE Texas), she and the son who is now a Marine were passengers on an AmTrak train that derailed just outside town in '98 or '99.  They were unhurt, and after he was flagged down by a Texas State Trooper, my barber, Johnny, gave them a lift to our little dinky airport in his old farm truck.  He told me that she was "regular folk" and pretty damn funny to be around.  After introducing herself, she asked Johnny, "Do you know what I was doing when the train wrecked?  I was sitting on the pot, and the wreck threw me right in the floor!" Cheers

Nope, there wasn't Democrat within miles of that place!

I went there with a few guys from work and we noticed there was no metal detector and security seemed really casual.  Then today, I read the story that McCain has NOT used Secret Service Protection yet!  He felt that $35,000/day of taxpayer money was too much and besides, he said they really get in the way!

I read in the Philly newspaper this morning that McCain was getting his first SS detail assigned to him this next week.  I was sort of surprised that he did not have one all along...just because he is (a) a US Senator, (b) a presidential candidate and (c) a former POW.  What ever....
