    Recon

I have signed a UZ infantry contract, and i'm expected to ship July 14th. Does anyone have any advice regarding the Recon Indoc, Recon, or just a fitness program that would help me get ready for the challenge? Thank you!

Running, pullups, and situps comes to mind but on top of that,  swimming, alot.

Yeah, I been working out pretty avidly..I've been looking around and asking everyone I know if they might know a Reconnassaince Marine that I could talk to and maybe get some detailed information, but i've had no luck so far :( If anyone knows one I could talk to, I'd really appreciate it.

If your lucky one will respond to you here.

Many try for Recon, many more fail than make it.

    Re: Recon

I did the indoc one time, just out of Boot. Here is some very simple and easy advice that should help you get there:

    1) Run till you throw up. Then, get a pack, fill it with 2 sand bags and run another 5 miles.

    2) Swim till you throw up. 1000 more meters after that.

    3) Pull ups till you fall off the bar. Then 100 more.

If you want day 2's workout. Let me know...

BTW... Most Recon Marines I know will not even talk to you till you have passed the Indoc. They want to know your serious... Just sayin'.

You could try talking to Jonathan (GreenVolunteer).

And "Indian"....why are you the self-appointed expert here?  What is your MOS?

    Re: Recon

I got your e-mail.... I don't think you read closely... I'm not a Recon Marine.  (though I'm very close to one Wink).  His basic advice:  Worry about boot.  Become a decent grunt.  Prove yourself as a combat basic rifleman.  Worrying about recon now will only hurt you.  No one who's been through indoc will tell you much about it... that's the whole point.

    Re: Recon

That makes a lot of sense. I really appreciate you taking the time to tell me that! I figured if I started to worry about things too far ahead, i'd slip up and mess something up on the way...but, with everyone's negativity toward getting into Recon, it honestly worried me to death that i'd have to start really getting ready for it now..I was more or less afraid that after boot and infantry school, I wouldn't be physically be capable of making it...so i'll take your advice, and continue to work hard to get into the best physical and mental shape possible, before I go to boot...and that's all I'll worry about. Thanks again!

    Re: Recon

There's a pretty slim to none chance that you'll be going to indoc straight out of SOI.  It's very frowned upon for boots to be there.  Frankly, they have no room for untrained Pfc's.  They want expereinced Marines.  Most of the enlisted who make it through are Cpl + and most Officers are senior 1stLts / jr Capts.  Another miscomception is that you have to be infantry.  We sent 2 airframers to indoc when we got back from Iraq.  It's open to any Marine who can make it.

Yeah, I was really debating on whether or not I wanted to go into Infantry or MP as my MOS, but I ended up deciding on infantry..I don't know, everyone is telling me MP, but I just have a gut feeling to go Infantry...Oh! Today I took my IST, I scored a 221. Is that a decent score for a poolie?

Be a Combat Infantryman, kid..............It's a honorable profession.

After a year or so, after seeing "The Dirt" overseas, then decide if you would like to be in RECON.

RECON does prefer Combat Experienced Riflemen over Aviation Airframers, right Captain.....

Yup! anyone can answer the call and try out..........but very, very few non-riflemen are selected.

If those Airframers become Recon, that would be a very big first.

I'll do what it takes to get there. If infantry is the best way to attain my goal, then i'll head that direction. But as for right now, i'll focus primarilly on getting ready to be a Grunt. Thanks alot everyone! Oh, and I still don't really know if that 221 is a good score or not, haha, could anyone let me know?

    Re: Recon

Your score looks fine...............Just be physically fit, be able to run, do pull-ups, and those silly crunches.  Build up your stamina and your endurance.  It's the hardest job in the Corps, and THE most important job in the Corps, all other MOS's support the Combat Rifleman.  Not everyone can do it, just prepare yourself physically.

Without Riflemen, there is no Corps!

    Good Luck!

Ok. I was wondering about attending additional schools offered by the military. My recruiter told me that once I finished all of the training that was on my contract, I could attend Ranger school, or BUD/s school(of course at the discretion of my CO). Is this true? and if so, is there a likely chance that would happen?

    Re: Recon

As with everything in the Corps, its time, space, money and needs of the Marine Corps dependant.  Yes, it's a possibility, but not a guarantee.  Not many are going now due to the high deployment cycle.

    Worry about Boot Camp first.

And as Gunny Miller said, every other MOS is there to support the 0311 in the Field.

Yes, Paul, what about the poor admin clerks, who knows where that paper has been?  How about warehouse clerk, they are endangered by pallets and crazy forklift drivers, ask Ryan.

Thanks so much for your input.  I have a great deal of respect for all our men and women in uniform, no matter what branch of service.  And, I am aware of the facts that you presented in your reply, but I am also aware of the fact that Recon Marines have attended both Ranger School and BUD/S in the past.  I look forward to the opportunity to step onto the Yellow Footprints and follow the long-standing Marine Corp traditions, but I also look beyond that.  I believe that if we "fail to plan, we plan to fail."  No harm in looking toward the future is there?
