    Mailing Cookies/ Bread -?

I really would like to send brownies/ Christmas cookies/ pumpkin or zuchini bread for Thanksgiving, but I have heard many a care package horror story about the food arriving tainted or spoiled in some way or another and keep picturing a disgusting look on tha face of my boyfriend.Ick!

I know that you should NEVER put food in with things like soap. However, are their any other guidelines or recipies that might be available??

Does vacume sealing the container work sucessfully?

Any advice is GREATLY appreciated! Big Smile

    Thanks!

    Hello and Welcome to Grits!!

Im sorry that I cant help you with this because my husband is just now in bootcamp. But I'm sure several of the ladies on the board would love to answer your question.

If I may suggest that you post an introduction to you in the Open Marine Wives/Girlfriends Forum-- just kinda tell us about you and how you are connected to the Marines and maybe add your food question to the end of it... we all love to welcome new ladies!!

Vacuum sealing would be a very big help in protecting against dirt, and broken liquid stuff, also the region out there is getting very cool temp-wise.  Put cookies in a Pringles Tube or pack cookies in popped popcorn.  Try not to send liquids (break & leak factor)  Hard candy, Chocolate (now that it is cooler)  Jerky, peanuts, almonds, cashews, party mixes.  Canned meats, sardines, kippers, tuna - in foil pak or cans.

On second thought - vacuum seal liquids in their original container.

    Re: Mailing Cookies/ Bread -?

When I sent cookies I would wrap them in plastic wrap with wax paper between the cookies (so they don't stick together), then put them in a ziplock bag, seal all but the corner and use a straw to suck the air out, then zip quickly and put into a ziplock or glad ware plastic dish with a slice of bread.  Brownies I just baked in gladware baking dishes that had lids, I can't find them anymore though.

You can make cakes in a jar (and I'm sure you can breads in a jar), you'll need wide mouth mason jars for this, plus really good bubble wrap (the best I found was the one with big bubbles).  Wash your jars, grease them (do not use pam), mix up your batter, and fill jars about half way (you don't want them to bake up to the top of the jar), bake, put rings and tops in water to boil.  When cakes are done (I think it only took like 30mins.)  carefully take out of oven and put a top and a ring onto still hot jar, you'll hear a little pop as the jar cools, the jar is sealed! Do Not Frost cakes before sealing, the frosting will go bad, just send the frosting along with the cakes.

I never got any complaints of spoiled food.  The cakes in a jar were a big hit.
