Help with the VA (Trying to rejoin)

Greetings, For the past two years since my discharge, I have been dedicated to finding a clean bill of health so that I may rejoin my brothers in the fight. I have heard so many stories of Marines and Soldiers able to get back to their units despite injuries which would keep them out in peacetime. The nature of my condition is a head injury. Every doctor I have seen, both VA and private, has basically said that I am good to go....but no matter how many times I send the information to the VA, they give me another appointment, a false promise, or they sit on it. My question is this: How can I make the VA take action, or at least move faster?

I am wondering why you are going to the VA in order to re-enlist? What does the VA have to do with anything other than post military service health care?

They are the ONLY agency who can clear you? They are so incompetant. How about a civilian doc???

Well I have the opinion of several doctors, including civilian ones (all favorable). My understanding is that a board of VA personel have to decide whether they can change things or not, and the Marine Corps is going to do what they say.

Just go to the Recruiting Station like MEPPS, and give your paperwork to the people who can move the mountain....CMC![;)]

Wrong wrong wrong.... the Marine Corps receives medical clearance from BUMED (Bureau of Medical Affairs) Navy. If you were discharged with an RE-3P you can expect to have a difficult time getting back in.

    Top: What's an RE-3P?

RE is Re-enlistment code - RE 1 is good to go, no restrictions. RE-3 is a medical reason for discharge. RE-3P is a Permenant Medical restiction (although can sometimes be waived). RE-4 is usually a dirtbag or disipline problem (brig etc). There are websites that explain this better than I can.

Got 'cha! I just pulled out my DD 214 and saw that I was RE-1 back in the day. As I have said in the past, I am sorry that I did not take them up on it and shipover when I had the chance. [:(]

Okay well, I've got all my records together and requested a review. I hope it works out. Should I, or could I wear my uniform to the proceedings? I'd like to show that I'm motivated and that how good it looks on me

No, I would suggest appropriate civilian attire.

Yeah, like a clean & pressed dress shirt (preferably white), a clean and press conservative tie...that is tied in a military knot and a sport coat & slacks...or better yet, a dark colored suit. Polish those leather low quarter shoes...preferabley black or cordovan. Get a high and tight hair cut and shave cleaner than a whistle. The best of good luck to you!!!

Oorah to that. Thanks Master Gunnery Sergeant. Update: I sent all of my stuff in for the board but today when I called (to try and get them to move faster), they told me that they didn't know where they put it. An old, highly motivated Former Marine came to my store the other day and said that I should try and get in touch with Senator Hutchison's office to make them act. Any thoughts on that?

RE: Help with the VA (Trying to rejoin)

I would talk to them once more and if they still can't find it (I hope you made copies, by the way) I would inform them that I am prepared to enlist the aid of my Senator if they don't get their act together.

These bastards sure are slow. I wish they had some kind of rules to keep them from gaffing it off. You can see I pretty much think about getting back in all the time.

Are you submitting your case directly to BUMED? I also have a RE-3P and I was told that I had to send my file to BCNR (Board for Correction of Naval Records). Amy I barking up the wrong tree?? I've been working on this for about two years now...

Got a letter back saying no, which means 'try again.' I'm requesting (again) a review in person. I can't be happy outside of the Corps.
