Top's M [Tops M] Well, that was fun!

No, its not too early.  This year is the 25th anniversary of the Vietnam Memorial and there will be many activities going on and I would hate to see us not be able to get into Arlington Suites.  I am 90% sure I will be there, but can not step up to volunteer as ringmaster.  Would someone please volunteer to at least get billeting secured?  As with every year, I am pretty sure we will have a need for at least 20 rooms on the 9th and 10th of November, probably the 11th this year too.  I hope to sign up to read names at the Wall,  we should all volunteer for that honor.

    Re: DC GriTogether November 2007

I posted this on a couple of Marine Corps websites I go to. Thought I would pass it on to all my email contacts also. You do not have to be military or family to take part in this. Anyone can volunteer and I would consider it an honor to be able to do so.
      Take care and God bless,
         Chris
I can't remember if I've posted this before,so my apology if I have.

This year is the 25th anniversary of The Wall. Pasted below is the schedule of events they will have to mark this anniversary. Thought I would post it for those who want to take part in the reading of the names. From what I understand from Marines who have taken part in this (in 2002), each volunteer is given a list of 20 or 25 names to read. They are read in chronological order by date of death, just as they are engraved on The Wall.

I also understand that it is possible to get a list with specific names on it, if you wanted to honor and remember a certain person. It will still be done in order though, just that you can ask for the list with those specific names on it.

Some friends from Grit's who did this in 2002 told me about 3 ladies who were in line in front of them. They all walked to the microphone together. The older of the three ladies was doing the reading of the names. She got to the last name on her list and after reading it said, "My son," and the other two ladies said, "and our brother."  My friends who were there said there wasn't a dry eye anywhere after that and that it was difficult for them to read their lists.

Never forget. Take care and God bless. Hope to see some of you there.

        Chris

This past Veterans Day, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund kicked-off a
year-long commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of The Wall. Plans are
in the works for commemorative and educational events to be held across
the country. A highlight of the anniversary commemoration will be the
reading of the more than 58,000 names on The Wall in November. This will
be the fourth time in The Wall's 25-year history that all of the names
have been read aloud in Washington, DC. Other highlights include:

    * March 26 - 25th Anniversary of the Groundbreaking of The Wall
(Ceremony,Wreath La ying and Panel Discussion)
    * November 6 - 25th Anniversary Music and Poetry Tribute
    * November 7 - 25th Anniversary Reading of the Names (Opening Ceremony)
    * November 7-November 10 - 25th Anniversary Reading of the Names
    * November 11- 25th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Vietnam
Veterans Memorial (Veterans Day Observance at The Wall)

The sign-up for the Reading of the Names will be in the Summer.
Registration forms, sign-up deadlines and other information will be
listed in the 25th Anniversary section of our website --

Also there are now two other Marine groups who stay at the Virginian Suites. Danny Schuster's 2/9, the largest group, has their reunion there and the Marine website The Squadbay started staying there also. They had more people than Grit's last year.

You're right, Top !  It's not too early.

As for the Reading of Names at The Wall, Pammie and I did it in 2002, and it was 20 names per person.  We were granted our request to read as a team, and read 40 names.

I don't mean to "rope" anyone in, but I believe John Wear did the "leg-work" that year for the readers from Grit's, so we were all clustered together.

About two months ago I volunteered as "Team Capt" for the Gritsters "Reading the Names" and signed up with folks that will be coordinating the event.  I believe that this summer they will ask for the acutal names and addresses so that they can mail the list of names to each person.  At that time I'll poll the group and get this set in stone.

I am pretty sure that Barb, Jimmy Mac, BamaMarine Chris, Velcro & Pammie have been in contact with me and maybe Georgia Cootie Chris.  Anyone is more than welcome to read with us...I will shoot for Saturday early afternoon on November 10th for our reading.  If anyone has a different preference, let's get it recorded sooner than later.  I am hoping that DD Billy, Larry Zok and maybe Turbo Jesse and anyone else from the DC area is willing to come up with us and of course, we cannot forget our Top.

Thanks, John.  I wasn't aware you'd already started the ball rolling.

Now, if we can get Devil Dog to check on rooms, we'll have a good start, with EXPERIENCE !

I may do the reading of the names twice while there. Once when all us Gritsters do it together and once again if I can get a list with a specific name on it. Namely Randolph Joel (Randy) Sterns, a Marine from Tuscaloosa who died in Nam May 9th, 1968. I never knew Randy personally even though he was engaged to a cousin of mine when he died. And his Mother was my neighbor the last 10 years of her life before she passed away in 2004 at age 93.

When she found out I was a Marine she told me all about Randy and sort of adopted me. One of the sweetest, kindest ladies I've ever known. I want to read Randy's name for her and also for the honor of reading the names.

I dont know if we can do this but here is a suggestion (I have never seen it happen in the 6 years I have been on the bb), but could we TRY to have this thread as a discussion, and then have one as an actual (like people that are really going to attend) but not turn that one into a bs thread?  That way we are not having to wade through 4 or 5 pages to locate a commitment.  I dont know, its never been done before on a GriTogether thread....

Top, just start a thread just for people to sign in on saying they WILL be there. Make it clear in your initial post that it is for that and ONLY that. Then if someone makes a post other than that, just delete it. I don't know who all has the power to delete posts but seems like this could be done.
If someone gets pissed for their post being deleted, well they are just a dumbass to begin with for not paying attention to what the thread is all about.

Bro Chris: We did just that several years ago.

Fergedaboudid...there is no way in the world that this will happen. Someone will write something that will remind some other person that they had to ask something and on and on and on.

Well, if my local Bro's (John and Jim) aren't going to be here to go to Cookie's, this must be the year to get serious about making the DC Gritogether and meeting more of you wonderful people in person.  Since it's only April, I'm a definite-maybe, I'm good to go, but I have to see if Mary can get the time off .  I'm also interested in participating in reading the names.  I've been wanting to make a DC Gritogether for a few years now, getting to particpate in part of the rememberance would make it much more special.
