    SHELL, ARTILLERY, MILITARY, BRASS.

I believe this is the upper 50% of a larger shell that was cut in half. This piece can be used as an umbrella/cane stand, waste basket...Sell for only $299 plus $20 shipping in the US. Shell stands 14.5" tall and measures 7.25" in diameter.

Anyone want to comment on the history of this item?

Are you selling this shell for 299 dollars? Does it have about 279 dollars tucked inside it?

It's mounted on a custom made lathe turned wood base.

And there is no money inside unless there is a trap door or mirrors hiding the bottom. Big Smile In which case there could be a treasure map or maybe gold coins, diamonds, rubys, emeralds...

Easily worth $299. This is a real artifact. Picture this in your house, RV... Totally cool.

BTW, can you tell what type of gun fired it...?

It's brass alright, and the width of the casing is larger than a 105mm Howitzer.

So guys, what kind of gun fired this shell? How old is it?

Do the ridges inside the shell help identify it?

Yup! no primer hole at the base, no real rim.  Might be an extruded peice of brass, that was an ornamental fixture of some sort.

I'm not giving up yet. I thinks it's real.

What if it's a shell that was cut in two equal pieces. The half with the primer and the other half shown here becomes an umbrella/cane/trash can?

Is there anything that confirms the brass shell as a real shell? How about those ridges in the shell. How about the measurements? I think they are an important clue. Who's the shell expert here?

For $250 you can aquire a dummy arty round that is painted the exact same colors as the real deal.  I am talking about a round that looks like it is ready to slam into the breech and fire off.  Why would anyone in their right mind pay $300 for a piece of brass?

And to think that all this commotion was created by trying to sell a shell, or at least get some history on it. Big Smile

I am still looking for that expert opinion since there seems to be disagreement. Anyone know about shell diameters of guns or the ridges inside the shell that can confirm it's use?

While we're discussing shells, take a look at the photo group of shells in this ebay ad http://cgi.ebay.com/20mm-Vulcan-AP-cutaway-display-round-inert-shell-RARE_W0QQitemZ150067011316QQihZ005QQcategoryZ104002QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

do I measure circumference or diameter? the conversion from inches to millimeters is 25.4 times inches = millimeters.

the shell measures approx 7.5 inches in diameter.

    here's the math

7.5 inch diameter shell x 3.12 (conversion from diameter to cirucmference) = 23.4 inches circumference x 25.4 (conversion from inches to millimeters) = 594 millimeters.

Thanks for the link. I checked the site and the front page is one long page equalling 50 or so pages with some nice photos of big guns. There seems to be a lot of information hidden in this site. When I get some time, I'll post it there and let you folks know what I've found out.

We'll get to the bottom of this and have some answers, I hope. Big Smile

    Re: SHELL, ARTILLERY, MILITARY, BRASS.

I recieved an email from the website people and he says this:

    "7.25 inches, roughly 185mm, isn't a standard caliber itself,
Though it could be a tank cartridge that has been cut below
the shoulder and above the base. It's not an artillery casing,
of that I'm pretty sure. I compared the draw marks in the
casing to a couple of rounds I have, from which I conclude
it's likely *not* US or Brit.  But really, aside from that, that's
as far was I can go. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.
I've got some buddies who are into tank ammo, I'll ask them."

So now we wait patiently for the tank guys opinions. I still think it is a real shell based on the background from which it came.

The brass tube, has nothing to do with Military Ordanance.

Sorry about that, asked a friend at Aberdeen Proving Grounds to look at this.  He should know, he was a 20 year Artillery Ordanance type from the Army and now works there.

    Mr Miller,

Could you email him one last time and ask him if the ridges on the inside of the shell shown here:

    http://new.photos.yahoo.com/skyvandelta/album/576460762334158959

confirm of deny it's use as an artillery or tank shell? I think they are the evidence that is needed.

I'd be happy to email him if you don't want to.

    Thanks

He said those are "drawn excrusion marks" and they would not be found in or on ordanance casings. (American, European, Soviet, and such)
