Thought I would retrieve this thread and use it to keep folks up to date on the WestPac Float.
We are halfway through (thank goodness) but I suspect the hardest part is still to come.
So...halfway through....Here is the latest from the 2/1 and the 13th MEU
From the Fighting 13th webpage.....

13th MEU, USS Cleveland lend helping hands in Greece
Story and photos by Cpl. Andy Hurt
13th MEU PAO
RHODES, Greece (Sept. 21, 2005) – Twenty Marines and Sailors from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) and the USS Cleveland (LPD-7) recently volunteered and participated in a community relations project during a three-day port call on the island of Rhodes, Greece.
From the city of Rhodes, the service members were bussed to the Center for Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation in Faliraki. Along with Sailors from the USS Oscar Austin and USS Donald Cook, who were also in port, the 13th MEU(SOC) warriors became the first U.S. military volunteers ever to help out at the center.
Arriving to the Center in the morning, the Marines and Sailors spent more than five hours painting fences, landscaping and performing other odd-jobs around the center.
Navy Lt. Jamie Stall-Ryan, the prior-enlisted Chaplain of the USS Cleveland, coordinated the event and got his hands every bit as dirty and paint-splattered as everyone on the scene, but took time to address the importance of community relations projects around the world.
“I think they spread the good nature of the U.S. and our military,” he said. “We’re not just ‘combat,’ we care about people and foreign relations.”
Corporal Cochise Fripp, a field radio operator for the 13th MEU (SOC), was one of nine Marines who participated in the project, and shared the Chaplain’s views on reaching out to those less fortunate.
“We’re not just here for liberty,” Fripp exclaimed, “and this shows we do have respect for other countries.”
Fripp, a native of Miami, said he felt that simply volunteering for community relations projects wasn’t enough.
“It should be mandatory that everyone participates in at least three (community relations projects),” he said. “The kids in the U.S. will see this as an example.”
While many of the Marines and Sailors considered the project as “just doing their job,” Tasos Spanos, the center’s president, took a higher ground in his view of the volunteer effort, and said he saw the project as progressive step in achieving world peace.
Addressing the volunteers at the end of the day, Spanos presented ceramic plates to U.S. coordinators and offered his perspective of the outcome of such projects.
“I would like to send the American population our thanks. We much appreciate this, and I think it is very kind of you to offer your service,” Spanos started. “This shows friendly relations between the U.S. and Greece, which has always been friendly, and shows that we are trying to build a world where everyone could get along. A world with no walls, no terrorists and no poverty. This is helping to build that place.”
The project was the most recent project completed by 13th MEU(SOC) and Expeditionary Strike Group One service members. Similar projects were also coordinated and executed in Hawaii and Australia, and plans for future projects at every port call stop during the Western Pacific Deployment are in the works.

Family and Friends,
We are experiencing problems with our Internet connectivity. Incoming emails with attachments larger than 2 MB are clogging the system, preventing messages from reaching their destination. As a result, Marines and Sailors may not receive emails from home.
We encourage you to stay connected to your Marine and Sailor through emails, photos and videos; however, in effort to keep the system up and running effectively we need your assistance.
Please send attachments that are 2 MB (2000 KB) or less. An email or attachment that exceeds 2 MB will be rejected by the system and the sender will receive an error message. The average picture can be saved at 100-130 KB, thus allowing you to send approximately 10 pictures per email. Note that if you add font or backgrounds to the email this can cause the text alone to exceed 200 KB.
If you have a file that exceeds 2 MB we suggest using a software program that enables you to save your file in a compressed format. An easy way to compress photos is simply adjusting the resolution. Files may be saved in different formats to include jpeg, bmp, and gif to be sent as attachments. To prevent undeliverable messages, check the size of your attachment prior to hitting send: click on the file (attachment), scroll down to properties and then left click to view the size of the file in KB.
We appreciate your assistance and cooperation. We will continue to keep you updated through our website and Key Volunteer network.
Semper Fi,
Col. J.K. LaVine

13th MEU Tiger Cruise
quote: 13th MEU Tiger Cruise
TARAWA is requesting a “Tiger Cruise” on our return trip from Pearl Harbor to San Diego. Our “Tigers” will meet the ship in Hawaii near the end of our deployment and accompany us on our return to homeport.
“Tiger Cruise” is a special guest cruise program where Sailors and Marines are permitted to embark friends and relatives. These guests are called “Tigers.” This program provides the opportunity for our family and friends to see and participate in the daily shipboard routine.
Each Sailor and Marine can invite two Tigers that meet the following criteria.
- Participants must be eight years of age or older.
- Spouses/girlfriends/boyfriends are not allowed to participate.
- All Tigers must be medically qualified.
- Foreign nationals may be invited, but special clearance is required.
The only expense will be the cost of the Tiger’s meals while onboard TARAWA. Please note that the military cannot pay your Tiger’s expenses to Hawaii for the Tiger Cruise, during the cruise, or, in the unlikely event that the cruise is cancelled, your Tiger’s trip back home.

As events unfold in Iraq....I offer this as my prayer for our Marines....
Abiding in the Shadow of the Almighty
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High
shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the LORD,
He is my refuge and my fortress:
my God; in him will I trust.
Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler,
and from the noisome pestilence.
He shall cover thee with his feathers,
and under his wings shalt thou trust:
his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night;
nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness;
nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
A thousand shall fall at thy side,
and ten thousand at thy right hand;
but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold
and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge,
even the Most High, thy habitation;
there shall no evil befall thee,
neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, Mt. 4.6 · Lk. 4.10
to keep thee in all thy ways.
They shall bear thee up in their hands,
lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Mt. 4.6 · Lk. 4.11
Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder:
the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Lk. 10.19
Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him:
I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
He shall call upon me, and I will answer him:
I will be with him in trouble;
I will deliver him, and honor him.
With long life will I satisfy him,
and show him my salvation.

Steel Curtain Kills at Least 17 Terrorists
American Forces Press Service
WASHINGTON, Nov. 6, 2005 – U.S Marines in Iraq today confirmed 17 terrorists killed since Operation Steel Curtain began Nov. 5. Coalition officials suspect, but haven't been able to confirm, many more killed.
Officials also reported coalition air strikes hit 10 targets today.
Also, terrorists reportedly fired on Iraqi soldiers and U.S. Marines from mosques in two separate incidents today. In both cases, Iraqi Army members entered quickly and searched the mosques, but the terrorists had already cleared the buildings. Terrorists frequently use religious and public buildings to launch their attacks.
The operation's fighting continued into the second day in the Husaybah near the Iraq-Syria border. The town is a location for foreign fighters, equipment and money to transit into Iraq. Iraqi soldiers and U.S. Marines have encountered and eliminated pockets of resistance throughout the day.
The combined force of about 1,000 Iraqi soldiers and 2,500 U.S. Marines, sailors and soldiers is clearing the city house by house as al Qaeda in Iraq-led terrorists continue to plant homemade bombs throughout the city and fire on Marines and Iraqi soldiers from homes, schools and mosques.
Marines and Iraqi soldiers have systematically searched every building. When locked buildings are encountered, forces typically cut the lock to gain entry for their search. Instructions to submit damages claims resulting from searches are left at the building for owners. Five teams of Marines have been tasked to help process claims for property damage.
After clearing Husaybah, Iraqi Army units will partner with Marines from Regimental Combat Team 2 to provide a joint presence in the city .Previous operations between Iraqi Army units integrated with Marines and soldiers assigned to the 2nd Marine Division have established a persistent joint presence recently in the cities of Hit, Hadithah, Barwana, Haqlaniyah, Sadah, Rawah, Amiriyah and Ferris.
Iraqi and coalition forces are providing 450 Husaybah residents displaced by the operation with billeting, food and security in temporary lodging.
There have been no reports of civilian casualties or of civilians leaving the region due to the operation.
