"No True Glory" by Bing West

Am about half finished with this one and it is a real page turner.  Our people are just fantastic Marines and West does a good job by them.  Was in Sh*thead Ally last night with Chris Ayers's and  Ismael Sagredo's platoon.

Thanks Jim. For the comments and reminder. Should also be some full reviews on Amazon.

Just finished reading "No True Glory" and now know why West was boycotted by many who were there.

What was interesting was not what was included, but what was excluded.

After reading the book, I'll be boycotting the movie too.

Care to enlighten those of us not privy to today's Corps's internal politics?

    Burkie,

I must confess, I was compelled to read it because whenever West's name is brought up in the company of people who were there, a huge amount of vitriol and venom is launched.  There are no "fence sitters" when you bring up West and his project.  So my curiosity was piqued...what can I say?

I tried to e-mail you my more fleshed out response regarding the personalities and intrigue as you requested, at the address I have on file, but it came back "undeliverable".

    Hugs

I have this book on my "To Be Read" book shelf.  I liked his writing in "The March Up."

I finally bought the book a few weeks back. Just started reading it and not quite half through. Wanted to finish it before making any comments, but since the thread has been renewed I will comment on what I have so far.

West gives a very different picture of what was going on during that period than anything we saw on any of the media (wow, big surprise!). From what I have read in it so far, I don’t see much negativity toward the Marines or the 82nd. There may be "something left out" that would make it more positive. But I have not finished it yet.

Our troops took a lot casualties while learning and honing tactics to kill or contain a more wildly divergent bunch of murderers than we thought existed there. After getting into the "rhythm of battle", really understanding how to do the job, they had to stop and "negociate"! In other words let the bustards rearm and regroup!

That is were I am right now.

I would recommend the book just based on what I have read so far.
