I will preface this by saying that these were true in the '80s and I beieve that they would be true now. These are 2 situations that will test the research skills of our newbies. I am unsure where Warrant Officers fall in these 2 situations. Situation 1: There are 2 Dress Blue covers on a table, 1 belongs to a Company Grade Officer and the other to a NCO. What is the key way to tell which is which just by looking? What was the purpose of this feature and what is it called? situation 2: There are 2 Eagle, Globe, and Anchors on a table, 1 belongs to a Captain, the other to a Corporal. What is the key feature in telling them apart? Good luck and enjoy. Paul

Situation 1 is easy-boot camp knowledge. Situation 2 is more obscure and I did not learn this until I got to my duty station after mos school. I could have also asked about green blouses. Paul

Situation 2 came up for me with some mismarked emblems at the PX when I was buying emblems for a junk on the bunk inspection. Paul

Not too sure about this, but for question number 2: The enlisted Eagle Globe and Anchor has Cuba on it while the officer does not.

Since I am here and you awnsered this a few hours ago... Sorry, Eric. That is not correct. Why have I heard this one before (Cuba)? Anyone know where it comes from?

Regarding question #2: HINT. It is exactly the same for the tie-tack as well, so if you are at a function with some Marines in civilian dress (eg a wedding, or a group of retired Marines) you can immediately tell if someone was Officer or enlisted by the tie-tack (if they are wearing one).

Question 3-Along the same lines. Three pair of dress blue trousers on hanging on a rack. A Pvt's, A Sgt's, and a Capt's. How can you tell the difference between the three?

Alright, sorry I haven't checked in. The officer's cover has a braided rope on top (originating from ship raids, so the marksmen wouldn't blow the top of their commander's head off).

Close enough Kristopher-now, what is it called. It was there so that the shooters in the riggings could identify their officers and not shoot them. Good job so far.
