For moms: What's the difference??
Between a colicky baby and just a normal crying baby??? How do you really know if your baby is crying TOO much????

RE: For moms: What's the difference??
Hope this helps.
Colic: An attack of crying and apparent abdominal pain in early infancy. This is a common condition, occurring in about 1 in every 10 babies. Colic is characterized by episodes of irritability, loud crying, and what appears to be abdominal pain with the legs drawn up and the abdomen feeling rigid.
An attack of colic usually begins suddenly, often after a feeding. The cry is loud and continuous. The spells last from one to four hours and the baby's face often gets flushed or red. The belly is sometimes distended or prominent; the legs alternate between flexed and extended straight out; the feet are often cold and the hands clenched. The episodes, while they can occur at any time of the day or night, typically begin in the late afternoon or early evening.
Overfeeding, undiluted juices, food allergies, and emotional stress can aggravate colic. Colic usually lasts from several weeks of age to 3 to 4 months of age. It is not harmful to the baby but is very consternating and wearing on parents.
Parents should not assume new abdominal pain and loud crying in their baby is colic. It is important for the baby to be seen by a doctor to rule out other more serious conditions.

I'm not sure if your bottle feeding, but if you are the formula could be what is making him cry a lot.

Thanks[:)]
But now I'm even more confused, lol. Aiden doesn't cry for more than maybe 10-15 minutes at a time. But sometimes he gets crazy-the "red-face" and he'll straighten and flex his legs, his hands get clenched too...Maybe I'm just being a hypochondriac(spelling?)...To me I thought all of "those" were semi-normal, but my mom mentioned something about it.
Is there anything that I can do to help if he does have it?? and how do they "diagnose" it????
This whole "mother" thing is so confusing....But suprisingly he's still in one piece[:D]

I'm breastfeeding..But could I still be "over-feeding" him???? At his last appointment his doc asked when I feed him and for how long(i told her whenever he wanted) and she said that was great..And right now, I'm still feeding "on demand"....

a colic baby is a baby that crys for long periods of time and nothing you do seems to make them stop..... if he crys and once you hold him he is happy or once he eats, then it's not colic, but if it's just been happening the past few days it could be the growth spirt...

No You can't over feed him..He'll eat until he had enough and when he doesn't want anymore he'll turn away!
!
Mady had crying "spells" like that and it always turned out after trying everything.. She was still hungry.. So maybe if he has a crying fit.. try to see if he'll latch on again even if its just for a min or two!

I'm not a mom, but my sister-in-law just had a baby on July 30, and the baby cries usually after she eats. She doesn't burp very well and that is a lot of the problem. My sister-in-law was told by her doctor to give her the baby gas drops (not quite sure of the name). That does seem to help a lot.

RE: For moms: What's the difference??
When a baby is colicky they scream and scream and rarely are you able to calm them down (during the episode). They will cry very very often. I'm guessing that he has gas or that your breast milk is not sitting well. I know they say that breast is best, but I had to stop breastfeeding with my youngest b/c he was so fussy after eating. Like you said....the red face, legs outstretched, etc. And I know he wasn't still hungry b/c he would stop eating. I tried changing my diet and it didn't seem to help so I put him on soy formula and he was great. I'd try some gas drops first and if it continues I'd talk to his doctor, but in my opinion I don't think it's colic. Good luck sweetie! :)

He could have an upset belly, is he getting more fussy after he eats? I know when Christian was a baby if he didn't burp enough after eating he'd get an upset belly & cry a little. As long as he was burped enough after eating he was fine.

my daughter does the same thing. she'll get red in the face and scream bloody murder for about ten min. and then shes fine. usually she justs likes to have the bottle nipple in her mouth. or ill just give her another ounce or so of formula and shes fine.

If you are not walking the floor with a crying unconsolable baby it is more than likely not colick.
It may be gas. If feeding him more does not work. And brurping does not work you can try laying him on his back and mving his legs in a bicycle like motion to work his little stomach to expel the gas.
They also make Mylocon drops to help with gas. They are over the counter. Target usually has them with the baby stuff.

Those mylocon drops are a life saver. Those really helped Kaylee and she did have colic. The poor thing would cry for 3 hours and give herself bloody noses. I just thank God that it was during the 5 months that Kyle was in the states so we could trade on and off!

Colic also seems to appear around the same time(s) each day.
Sounds like it might be gas. Try Mylicon or Gripe Water drops.

It sounds like an upset tummy to me. Maybe try wtiting down what you are eating and seeing if it is anything in that area. I used to lay my babies across my legs, face down, and pat them or bounce them to help get the gas out. Or you can rub the lower part of his belly in a circle motion, I am not sure but I think from left to right. Mylicon is awesome as well! Congrats on the breastfeeding, it is a lot of work but totally worth it.

RE: For moms: What's the difference??
Robbie was a colic baby. The only thing that calmed him was when we put him in his swing. The drops work too....if you have a swing that swings side to side that may work. pulling the babies legs to his tummy and back down may help too...kinda like motorboat but with a side to side motion added to it.
Good luck hun. I know how hard that can be.

There's a famous pediatrician who has an interesting theory on colic, and does some interesting things. We took classes from him for work, it was definately interesting. You can read more here if you want to.
