    I'm new here

Hi my name is Amber I'm new here, soo... My father is a retired Marine and my friend and I are considering joining the Marines when she graduates (next year). We are looking for people who could give us any advice and tell us what we are going to experience. Our best friend just left for bootcamp on Tuesday she was really nervous. Any info would be very helpful

One suggestion. It's "OOH-RAH!" in the Marine Corps. "hoorah" is the army's attempt to copy the Marines....again. At least that's what I've always been told about that army cry.

Dave, you beat me to it re. oohrah. Amber, you post that your dad is a retired Marine. I cannot think of a better source of information than him re. you and the Corps. Talk to him and your local recruiter. You realize, of course, that you will go to boot camp on the other coast at Parris Island. Also, tell you dad to join us here at Sgt. Grit. Sgt. Wolf

    RE: I'm new here

I thought it was OOhrah, but then I was told it was hoorah and the army was Hooah, but thanks. I've talked to my dad and he's kind of hesitant for me to join simply because I'm his little girl and you know how that goes. I still haven't taken the ASVAB. I took the practice test online and I did really well. I did use a calculator though and I'm sure you cannot use those on the real test right? What happens if I don't pass the test? Also I was told we will not end up on the frontlines because we are females. I don't care either way. We want to do the Reserves from what we were told is that it's a two year enlistment and we will be stationed in San Diego ( our home town). The two years does not include the 13-weeks in bootcamp correct?

I love to Corps as much as I love life itself. But on that note, I would NOT recommend my daughter to join the Corps. If she wants to, fine by me, and I will support her 110%. But that is the eeason I joined to Corps, so she wouldn't have too... But that's just me and I have been wrong once or twice before!

First welcome aboard Amber. Second - there is nothing saying you will not see combat. If you will notice, the majority of casualities are our Reservists that are there in support roles. An IED does not care if it is a truck of grunts or a truck of cooks. Keep that in mind. I'm not sure how they are working the 2yr enlistments, but I know for 4yrs it does include the 13 weeks at the Island. But also know it is an 8 year commitment no matter what. It could be a 2yr Active Reserve and 6yr Inactive Reserve, but it will always equal an 8yr commitment. If I recall correctly 2yr enlistments were for 03's only. Yeti

    RE: I'm new here

if we are called to go to the frontlines we are ready to do that. Yea my dad doesn't really want me to go, but he knows it's something I want to do and he said he'd support me either way. I just got a letter from my friend she left for camp last Tuesday. She said she'd tell me everything I need to know so I'll be prepared. What were some of the things you guys experienced in camp? If you were to give me advice what would it be? Thanks for your replies. Oh yea how could I go about becoming penpals with Marines that are at bootcamp or overseas.I'm sure they could use the extra mail and I have free time so can anyone help with that? Please?

    Re: RE: I'm new here

As for the father aspect.... I can relate / help a little.  I'm the oldest, and happen to be female, of incredibly liberal hippie parents.  (Dad spent most of his time protesting anything military and burning flags.)  The day after I returned from Iraq, he sent out an email to a bunch of his colleagues / friends.  Here's an excerpt:

" Never in my life did I expect to have a child, especially a daughter, in a combat zone.  There isn't a new father of a baby girl who ever thinks that one day he'll go to sleep wondering how many times that baby was shot at.  Nor that one day she'd send home pictures of chared body parts and buring vehicles titled "Today's Work."  But there's also not a prouder moment than being able to look at that baby, years later, and call her your hero.  To know that she loves you, and the country that allowed you to live and succeed, more than herself.  Not a day went by that I didn't recieve a call ... at home or in the operating room ... asking how she was.  Every day I grew more and more proud, because every day she became someone new's hero.  "

Pretty soon we can say "YAY!" again

you wont fail the ASVAB, I got a 95 out of 99 on it, its not that hard, and I am not that smart. The practise test is harder than the actual test (the one I took at the recruiters office) you will do fine on the ASVAB its all 11th grade material
